An autonomous system number (ASN) identifies a network that runs its own routing on the internet: a carrier, a cloud, a university, a large company. Each one announces the IP prefixes it carries to its neighbours over BGP, and that is how the rest of the internet knows where to send traffic.

Address-to-AS lookups use iptoasn.com (public domain). Names, countries and allocation dates come from the five registries' published files. All of these are refreshed every day.
